AbstractIn this paper we study fat points of Pn whose support is contained in a linear subspace of dimension r, with r<n, and we determine in some cases the Hilbert function, in other cases the regularity index (or an upper bound for it) in Pn, in terms of what is known in Pr

Endless Visions, Virtual Desires, and Broadcasted Emotions. Frederick Kiesler’s Architectures of Immersion

Get PDF
The article aims to investigate the salient features of Frederick Kiesler oeuvre – the theatrical mise-en-scene as a multimedia display, the dramatization of the space of consumption and the space of the art exhibition for immersive purposes, cinema understood as a totalizing and spiritual experience, and the intuition of a virtualized, individual and domestic experience of the artwork – through the analysis of a selection of his projects, in light of the most recent categories proposed for the investigation of immersivity. The purpose of this study is to place Kiesler’s work in a mediaarchaeological perspective that takes into account the constant and fruitful asynchrony with the media present in which his work is historically situated

Diplofuranones A and B, two further new 4-monosubstituted 2(3H)-dihydrofuranones produced by Diplodia corticola, a fungus pathogen of cork oak

Get PDF
Two new 4-monosubstituted 2(3H)-dihydrofuranones, named diplofuranones A and B, were isolated from liquid cultures of Diplodia corticola, a plant pathogenic fungus causing a canker disease of cork oak (Quercus suber L.). The same fungus also produces several metabolites such as the diplopyrone, the (3S,4R)-trans- and the (3R,4R)-cis-4-hydroxymellein, the sapinofuranone B and its (S,S)-enantiomer, the well known sphaeropsidins A-C, and the diplobifuranylones A and B. The diplofuranones A and B were characterised, using spectroscopic (essentially NMR and MS techniques) methods, as the 4-[(1E,3E)-5-hydroxyhexadienyl]butan-4-olide and its corresponding 3,4-dihydro side chain derivative. The stereochemistry of the stereogenic secondary hydroxylated carbon of the side chain of diplofuranone A was determined by application of Mosher’s method and proved to be R. Diplofuranone A tested at 0.2 mg mL-1 on non-host plant did not show phytotoxic activity

A nuclear weapon-free zone in Europe: concept - problems - chances

"The nuclear weapon free-zone (NWFZ) concept has been explored thoroughly in the decades since its introduction, and several regions throughout the world have succeeded in the challenging task of establishing such a zone and thus promoting nuclear non-proliferation and peace. The 2010 Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) called on all states to establish additional NWFZ in regions, where such zones do not exist. The possible establishment of a NWFZ in conflict areas where the threat of nuclear weapons is present, such as the Middle East or South Asia, has already been at the center of much diplomatic and research effort for some time. This study takes on a new challenge and explores the idea of establishing a NWFZ in the heart of Europe, a region least likely to be associated with this concept: three major European states (France, Russia and the UK) are official nuclear weapon states and an extra-regional nuclear weapon state (the US) is heavily present through its practice of nuclear sharing with its European NATO allies."

Get PDF
In this article, we compare the answers given by two deaf Italian twins in the standardized test TCGB and in a test developed by linguists to analyse the competence of passives in children. Results show that their comprehension of passives is more impaired than other syntactic constructions. Based on the comparison of the results obtained in the two tests, some suggestions are provided to design standardized tests for the clinical practice and language rehabilitation and teaching strategies

PDE5 inhibitors in type 2 diabetes cardiovascular complications

Get PDF
Pharmacological inhibition of Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) proved its efficacy treating several pathological conditions, such as erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension. Nowadays, its benefits on cardiovascular diseases are well documented, particularly in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2DM)-related cardiovascular complications. In this context, treatment of T2DM with PDE5 inhibitors, such as sildenafil, tadalafil or vardenafil ameliorates endothelial dysfunction both in patients and animal models through an augmented flow mediated dilation rate and an up-regulation of endothelial markers; it also reduces the inflammatory state by down-regulating inflammatory cytokines expression and improves diabetic cardiomyopathy and ischemia-reperfusion injury mainly through the activation of NO-cGMP-PKG pathway. The present review summarizes the state of art on PDE5 inhibition in the treatment of cardiovascular complications in T2DM

Enhancing second harmonic generation by Q-boosting lossless cavities beyond the time bandwidth limit

Nanostructures proved to be versatile platforms to control the electromagnetic field at subwavelength scale. Indeed, high-quality-factors nanocavities have been used to boost and control nonlinear frequency generation by increasing the light-matter interaction. However, nonlinear processes are triggered by high-intensities, which are provided by ultrashort laser pulses with large bandwidth, that cannot be fully exploited in such devices. Time-varying optical systems allow one to overcome the time-bandwidth limit by modulating the cavity external coupling. Here we present a general treatment, based on coupled mode theory, to describe second harmonic generation in a doubly resonant cavity for which the quality-factor at the fundamental frequency is modulated in time. We identify the initial quality factor maximizing second harmonic efficiency when performing Q-boosting and we predict a theoretical conversion efficiency close to unity. Our results have direct impact on the design of next generation time-dependent metasurfaces to boost nonlinear frequency conversion of ultrashort laser pulses
